ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — With a major donation day for Roanoke nonprofits taking place on Wednesday, Angels of Assisi will hold an event featuring some of the animals whose lives have been saved thanks to past contributions to the Biscuit Fund.

According to the Angels of Assisi, the Biscuit Fund “ensures that animals seized in cruelty cases are provided the best medical care and diagnoses available, a safe haven for rehabilitation, and expert medical staff on hand to testify in court to prevent neglect and cruelty from happening to another animal.”

From midnight until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20 — which is called “GIVE Roanoke Day” — members of the Star City community are encouraged to donate to any of dozens of organizations making a difference in the Roanoke Valley. This event is organized by the Council of Community Services, in partnership with local
nonprofits.

Starting at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Angels of Assisi will host a small event in honor of GIVE Roanoke Day with several recent recipients of the Biscuit Fund, including ‘Luna.’

Luna was brought to Angels of Assisi in critical condition after Roanoke Animal Control found her tied to a pole in a park in late November 2021. According to the nonprofit, she was extremely malnourished and anemic, and she also had failing kidneys due to untreated Lyme disease, as well as an obvious tumor.

Luna has endured some intense emergent medical treatments, including IV fluids, antibiotics, and even a blood transfusion, but the Angels of Assisi medical staff monitored her very closely monitored Luna for weeks.

During that time, though, Luna made her debut on stage in the Southwest Virginia Ballet’s performance of “The Nutcracker” at the Berglund Center! On top of that, Luna found a very loving home and — thanks to medical treatment and lots of care — has gained more than 30 pounds.

If you want to meet Luna and the other animals who received a second chance at life through the Biscuit Fund, they will be in front of Angels of Assisi at 415 Campbell Avenue SW on Wednesday.
