ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon kicked off with a bang early Saturday morning.
This race is considered ‘America’s Toughest Road Marathon,’ challenging runners with over 7,430 feet in elevation.
The race was canceled last year due to the pandemic. This year, Foot Levelers worked diligently to follow COVID-19 guidelines.
For example, runners were placed in groups of 50, with 133 square feet of space for each runner to practice social distancing.
“I think it just shows the love of our region and the toughness of our course, and it’s just great to see all these different people coming together celebrating health, wellness, and running. We are so excited that we are all participating again together in person,” said Molly Bullington, race director.
Proceeds from the race will benefit the parkway and local charities.
