American Red Cross hosting blood drives around Roanoke, Salem after seeing lowest blood donor turnout since start of pandemic

Roanoke Valley News

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — As more people receive the COVID-19 vaccine and life returns to normal, there’s one thing that will stay the same: the need for blood.

Last week, the American Red Cross saw its lowest blood donor turnout since the pandemic started last year.

A Red Cross spokesperson says the need for blood has increased recently as people return to their regular routines.

“More and more hospitals and places are doing elective surgeries now than they were doing during the pandemic,” said Christy Carneal, a spokesperson for the American Red Cross. “Things are being rescheduled or things that were put off during the pandemic are no longer being put off.”
