SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — Salem High School Administration has written a letter to parents explaining a threatening incident that happened at school on Tuesday.

According to a letter from Salem High School, which was forwarded to WFXR News, the incident on Tuesday, Dec. 7 involved a threat made by a student about bringing a weapon to school.

The letter explains that the situation has been thoroughly investigated and the students involved have been identified.

Officials say the student who made the threat has been disciplined and the matter has been turned over to the Salem Police Department.

School representatives say they believe the threat was the result of an altercation at the school and they don’t believe the student poses a threat to anyone else at the school.

Dear Families, 

The purpose of this message is to inform the community of an incident at our school today.  

Just after lunch today, administrators learned through student word of mouth, of a threat made by a student. The threatening statement referenced bringing a weapon to school.  

The administration has thoroughly investigated this incident and positively identified the students involved. We have been in direct contact with the families of the students and have referred the incident to the Salem Police Department. The student who made the threat has been disciplined according to the Student Code of Conduct. At this time we believe the threat was the result of an altercation at school and we do not believe the student poses any threat to staff or students.

It is our intention to ensure we provide a safe learning environment for our students and employees. We take this moment to thank the students and families who reported this concern to school administrators and we encourage you to communicate with school officials about any substantial safety concern you may become aware of in the course of a school year.  

In summary, with respect to today’s events, the school and central office administration believe this incident has been thoroughly investigated and that the student does not pose a threat to the school, students, or staff.
