ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Eleven recruits from the 27th Roanoke Valley Regional Fire-EMS Academy will take part in a graduation ceremony on Friday morning and transition into their roles as firefighters/EMTs or paramedics for local emergency response agencies.
Congratulations to the graduates of the Roanoke Valley Regional Fire & EMS Academy #27! We are so proud of you and want to welcome you to the Fire & EMS family!Roanoke FireEMS Department Facebook page
According to fire officials, Academy #27 is made of five graduates from Roanoke Fire-EMS, four graduates from Roanoke County Fire & Rescue, and two graduates from Botetourt Fire & EMS.
Even though Salem Fire & EMS did not have any recruits in this year’s class, personnel from the department reported supported the academy with instructors and the necessary equipment to train these newcomers.
“Although no training or certifications are required for hire, #27 Academy graduates came into the program with previous Emergency Medical Service certifications. Their academy consisted of a condensed recruit school of only 13 weeks. Recruits were checked-off in the field on first responding medic trucks and focused predominately on fire training. The fire training included: Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, building construction, forcible entry, ventilation, search and rescue, and hazardous awareness, to name a few.”Kristen Perdue, Roanoke Fire-EMS
Once pinned during the ceremony on Friday, April 9 — which you can watch live from the Berglund Center on the Roanoke Fire-EMS Facebook page at 10 a.m. — fire officials say some graduates will begin their work assignment as soon as Saturday, April 10.
