100 racers hit the pavement for the 8th Annual Backpack Run

Roanoke Valley News

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Many had an extra pep in their step early Saturday morning as they ran, walked, or jogged for a good cause.

One hundred racers participated in Roanoke County Public Schools Backpack Run 5k and 10k races at Green Hill Park.

This year’s race is different because it features a virtual half marathon featuring an all-new Backpack Challenge.

“We want to celebrate all the great things we are as a community, and being active and being engaged is just one of those. We are thankful to the community for supporting this for eight years now,” said Chuck Lionberger, the Director of Community Relations for Roanoke County Public Schools.

When racers cross the finish line both in-person and virtually, they will receive a medal designed by the Burton Center for Arts & Technology students.

Proceeds from the Backpack Run support the Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation.
