A Roanoke program has been recognized as the best in the state.

Lead Safe Roanoke recently was named the 2018 Virginia Housing Award for Best Housing Preservation/Revitalization Effort at the Virginia Governor’s Housing Conference in Arlington.

The program currently uses a grant to test children for lead poisoning, educate and train the community on the hazards associate with lead-based paint, and identify, assess and perform lead hazard control activities for housing units in the city.

Since the grant was given to the city in 2003, 364 residential housing units in the city have been cleared of lead-based paint hazards.
