Red Cross preparing for winter storm amid blood supply shortage

Local News

(WFXR) — As the American Red Cross prepares to have volunteers and resources ready to help families in need of shelter during this weekend’s winter storm, it’s also dealing with a record low blood shortage.

Due to blood drive cancellations during the last snowstorm, the Red Cross lost 500 units of blood in Virginia.

As many as 50 units of blood were lost in Southwest Virginia. Just one unit of blood can save as many as three lives, so those lost 50 units of blood could have been used to save as many as 150 people.

That’s why the Red Cross is asking if you can, to head to a blood drive or donation center on Saturday, Jan. 15 to donate before the winter storm arrives.
