UPDATE 2/23 (10:40 A.M.) — After being charged with a DUI, a judge sentenced the Radford University men’s basketball coach, Darris Nichols on Thursday, Feb 23.
According to court documents, Nichols was fined $2,500, sentenced to 180 days in jail with 178 days suspended, and his driver’s license was suspended for 12 months.

UPDATE (4:30 P.M.)– According to court documents, Darris Nichols’s blood alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit.
Radford city police say it all started after a call came in about a suspicious man on Wadsworth and Perching Street.
That caller told police, Nichols came to their home and appeared to be under the influence of something.
Documents show the caller also told police Nichols had left that home in a black SUV. When police arrived, they found Nichols parked in the middle of the street.
Court documents continued to say a strong odor of alcohol was coming out of Nichol’s car. Nichols was said to have slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and extremely unsteady feet.
The officer in the documents says, Nichols was polite and cooperative with the officer, but allegedly had been driving his vehicle under the influence.
He is being charged with that DUI.
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – According to the New River Valley Jail, Radford University’s men’s basketball coach, Darris Nichols was charged with a DUI on February 19th.
University officials have released the following statement in response.
“Radford University is currently evaluating the situation. Shane Nichols will serve as the acting head coach. This is a personnel matter, and we have no further comment at this time.” – Becky Brackin, Associate Vice President for University Relations
Jail records show that around 11:40 pm on Sunday, 36-year-old Nichols was arrested and then charged at the New River Valley Regional Jail for allegedly driving under the influence. He was later released around 1:30 am on Monday, February 20th, after posting a $3,500 bond.
