Protocols in place to protect offenders and staff during heat wave

Local News

An extreme heat wave is hitting the Commonwealth this weekend and the Virginia Department of Corrections is protecting offenders and staff by putting protocols in place for facilities without climate control air conditioning.

Staff has installed additional fans to keep housing units comfortable and extra ice and water are available to keep everyone hydrated. Virginia Department of Corrections says 18 facilities in the state were built without climate control air conditioning.

The rest of the VADOC facilities have climate control air conditioning and haven’t had any major disruptions during the extreme heat.
