After you unwrap your Christmas gifts, it’s time to get rid of the trash. But, what you put at the curb could make you a target for thieves. “Anytime you’ve got your 70-inch big screen or flat screen crammed into your trash can, and it’s over flowing, and someone sees that,” said Scott Leamon with Roanoke City Police. “It’s possible that a bad guy’s going to come by and see that, and then, be thinking, i wonder what else is in that house.”
Leamon says there are ways to protect yourself. First, break down the boxes. Cut them up and put them in recycling or take them to a local dump. Do not leave your boxes at the curb to deter criminals. If you cannot make it to a dump, store the boxes inside your garage or home until you can throw them out. Also, most burglaries happen during the day, while people are at work. Be sure to lock your doors and windows and keep a light on at night.
