Power restored at Blacksburg voting precincts, squirrel caused the outage

Local News

Power has been restored to two Blacksburg voting precincts, that had lost power for an hour and a half.

The precincts are a part of the VT Electric Services Power Grid. According to a university spokesman, a squirrel that was in an underground switch is what caused the outage.

Despite the power loss, the precincts stayed fully operational the entire time thanks to battery-powered equipment and a generator.

According to Montgomery County Public Information Officer Jennifer Harris, around 4:26 p.m. both voting precincts at the Blacksburg Library and Margaret Beeks Elementary School lost power. She said it was a significant power outage that affected more than just those two precincts.

Margaret Beeks Elementary School received a generator just before 5:30 p.m. and a generator were on its way to the library, Harris said.

Virginia Tech Electric Services had posted on social media that crews are on site trying to find the problem in order to get the power restored.
