ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The sixth Big Lick Comic-Con kicked off this weekend! The two-day event features a massive experience of comics, vendors, artists, gaming, cosplay, and guests.
The WFXR team, a proud sponsor and participant for Big Lick Comic-Con, set up the news tent and complimentary super-hero posters to witness a steady crowd of excited comic fans pour into the Berglund Center.
JD Sutphin, Founder of Big Lick Entertainment says, “I think it is absolutely going to be our biggest yet.” Sutphin says pre-sale tickets were the first indicator of that.
Pre-sale wise they were double what they were in August which was our biggest yet, and to still see the lines just coming in and coming in and see the smiling faces!JD Sutphin, Founder of Big Lick Entertainment
A big part of that turnout could be due to the epic guest list.
Guest creators include Bob McLeod, Graham Nolan, Christian Gossett and Tom Cook. Celebrity Guests include actor James Marsters of Marvel’s Runaways and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Pro-Wrestling star Lisa Marie Varon, and Jason David Frank of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers!
Frank had a line of fans waiting to meet, greet, and get autographs signed, he even addressed his fans with the big question, “What time is it?” The line of fans excitedly replying, “It’s morphin’ time!”
We were able to chat with one of Frank’s fans, Brandon Wilmoth, who addressed Frank as his “hero.”
I’ve been wanting to see him since I was five-years-old. I met him in North Carolina about two years ago, and he’s so humble and he’s the most genuine guy in the world. He’ll do anything for his fans, so I’ll wait three hours if I have to.Brandon Wilmoth, Power Rangers fan
The adoration from fans is much reciprocated by Mr. Frank.
It’s amazing to come meet all the ‘kids’ who are all now, 28, 30, 35 and they have their kids.Jason David Frank, Power Ranger- notably the Green Ranger
Frank isn’t the only one who notices that Comic-Con is bringing generations together. Sutphin, the creator of the event is also recognizing that people and families of all ages are coming together for the event.
The coolest thing to me is this is stuff that I grew up with. I loved the Power Rangers. I love Buffy, comic books, when it’s all in one crazy spot like this, but I see these little kids with their parents having fun and playing with maybe even the same toy that they played with and having that connection and then knowing that we’re pulling people from thousands of miles away to Roanoke, it’s hard to describe.JD Sutphin, Founder of Big Lick Entertainment
The connection and love for comics and all it encompasses is being felt at Roanoke’s Berglund Center for what many believe will be Big Lick’s biggest Comic-Con yet!
