The Lynchburg Police Department has released the identity of a man killed in a shooting Wednesday night as 32-year-old Benjamin Lee Friar from Concord, Virginia.
Tyler Andrew Dabney, 18, is charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The charges stem from a shooting at an apartment in the 1500 block of Longview Road. A 32-year-old man was killed.
Tyler Andrew Dabney is being held in the Blue Ridge Jail Lynchburg Adult Detention Center.
City Councilman for the Ward II where the shooting happened, Sterling Wilder says the area has seen its problems in the past but is a work in progress.
“So there has been some issues in the past, but we continue to work together with the community to bring resources into the area,” said Wilder.
“I was really saddened. Right now we’ve had about 6 or so, homicides this year. Unfortunately, they all have been in Ward II.”
The two-year city council member also serves as the executive director of a local community center. He says he’s partnered with other organizations to help reduce gun violence and poverty for his Ward.
“We keep pulling the resources. We have tutoring programs, mentoring programs, they have bible clubs there, and other various programs. So we continue to plant seeds in James Crossing and other areas of Ward II, but again this just lets us know our work is not done. We have to continue fighting,” said Wilder.
He says it’s going to take more than just him, but the community is going to have to work together to make a difference.
“I don’t want to settle for any homicides, period, or any poverty, period. So our work will never cease. We have to continue to be vigilant. And it just gives you more fire against this fight of violence in our community,” Wilder said.
