An officer shot and killed a “vicious” pit bull that attacked a woman in Hampton Thursday morning, police say.

Hampton police said the woman was attacked and bitten on her own property on Woodcrest Drive. An officer was dispatched to the area just before 12 p.m. and searched for the dog, which was roaming the area.

Police said the officer found and tried to safely catch the dog, but the dog started to charge at the officer.

The officer retreated to his patrol car, but the dog continued advancing toward him. Police said the officer shot the dog before he was attacked or injured.

The woman was treated at the scene by medics. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
