Police: Man shot, killed wife while child was home

KING AND QUEEN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Authorities have charged a man in King and Queen County after he allegedly shot and killed his wife on May 11 while a child was in the home. 

The King and Queen Sheriff’s Office reported to a residence after receiving a call for a shooting.

Upon arrival, deputies had a standoff with a male, identified as Bernie Lee Thompson. 

Thompson, 58, of King and Queen Court House, eventually surrendered to deputies and was taken into custody. 

During the search of the residence, deputies located a woman on the back deck with a single gunshot wound.

The woman, identified as Jo Ann D. Thompson, wife of Mr. Thompson, was dead on the scene. 

A child, unidentified by police, was present during the incident. The child was unharmed. 

Mr. Thompson has been charged with second-degree murder, the use or attempt to use a firearm while committing or attempting a murder while being a parent, guardian for the care of a child under the age of 18. 

Mr. Thompson is being held without bond while he awaits arrangement.

The investigation is ongoing.
