WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Police released additional details about Tuesday’s traffic stop and the other events that led up to Wednesday’s manhunt in Wythe County, as well as the collaborative law enforcement efforts that resulted in the discovery of the fugitive.
According to the Wytheville Police Department, the night of Tuesday, Sept. 15, Virginia State Police conducted a traffic stop along the interstate near Wytheville. Police say one of the occupants of the vehicle — which was transporting illegal narcotics — ran away from the traffic stop.
Early in the morning on Wednesday, Sept. 16, the department says the person asked a truck driver on Lithia Road in Wytheville if he could use the driver’s phone to call his mother because he had been running from the police all night. However, the truck driver reportedly refused and the person ran into a cornfield.
“Multiagency teamwork, old fashioned police work, combined with modern technology brought the search for the suspect to a peaceful ending, with the subject in custody,” the Wytheville Police Department said.
According to police, first, they used a description of the individual and last known location to set up a perimeter around the cornfield and surrounding woods.
Next, a Virginia State Police helicopter reportedly conducted a grid search to keep the subject pinned down in the woods.
Afterward, officials say Deputy Chief Davenport used the Wytheville Police Department’s drone with a heat-seeking camera to distinguish heat and movement in the wood line.
Lastly, according to the department, a Virginia State Police K-9 tracked the area of the heat signature and spotted the individual, who quickly gave up.
Police have yet to release the name of the man who was taken into custody, or the charges he faces.
