Pittsylvania County man charged after ‘life-long friend’ from Botetourt County dies in shooting

UPDATE 12:16 p.m.: The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office says the Pittsylvania County man charged after a shooting over the weekend was “life-long friends” with the Botetourt County man who died in the shooting.

The investigation into this fatal shooting is still under investigation, according to authorities.


PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A Pittsylvania County man is facing manslaughter charges after a shooting left a Botetourt County man dead over the weekend.

According to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and investigators responded to 3957 Pocket Road in Hurt after a shooting was reported to the Pittsylvania County 911 dispatch center shortly before 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, July 11.

Authorities say EMS pronounced the shooting victim — identified as 44-year-old Corey Andrew Moon of Troutville — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say 44-year-old Montel M. Oakley — who lives at the same address in Hurt where the shooting was reported — has been arrested and charged with manslaughter. He is currently being held without bond in the Pittsylvania County Jail.

This shooting is reportedly still under investigation.
