PULASKI COUNTY, Va. (WFXR)– Some parents in Pulaski County say they’re upset about the district canceling classes for all schools on Thursday and Friday.

The school says since the girl’s high school basketball team won last night and advanced to the state championship game in Richmond, they wanted everyone to get the chance to go, and support the cougars.

Pulaski County Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, March 9th and Friday, March 10th in order for our students, faculty, and staff to attend the state championship basketball game in Richmond. Go Lady Cougars!”

“Pulaski County is an area where the availability for childcare for school-aged children, on a whim like that is non-existent,” said Serena Anderson, Mother.

Anderson has two children who go to Dublin Elementary School and explains she feels this was a reactionary decision and the school system is not thinking of the consequences.

“I know people who will face reprimand at their jobs if not termination if they are not able to go to work on these days,” said Anderson

Although, not all parents feel the same way.

Many took to Facebook to share their appreciation for the decision saying it’s important to show community support.

Others adding it’s better to highlight the girl’s basketball team instead of complaining.

Anderson says the school isn’t thinking of the children’s education.

“My child is missing out on a field trip on Friday that has been scheduled,” said Anderson.

Other parents say their children are also missing out on an eighth-grade SOL test, and kindergarten registration.

WFXR news reached out to the school system for comment. Superintendent, Dr. Kevin Sears was unavailable.
