UPDATE 12:08 P.M. CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A major employer in the New River Valley is laying off hundreds of workers.
According to a notice posted by the Virginia Employment Commission, the Parkdale Mills in Hillsville will be closing its doors. The notice has an impact date of Oct. 9, 2023, and will impact approximately 326 employees.
In 1916, the company first started and is now one of the world’s leading manufacturers of spun yarns. Just two years later, Parkdale Mills began producing 425 tons of yarn per year on one plant. Now, the company has over 20 sites across the U.S., and its headquarters are based in North Carolina.
The manufacturer closing and leaving is going to be felt throughout the community.
“It provided a lot of jobs for a lot of people. A lot of the children that I taught worked there,” said Anne Cochran, a Hillsville resident and former educator.
Co-owner of the Hillsville Dinner, Bobby Bradbery shared that the manufacturer closing is going to have an impact.
“It’s definitely going to have an impact on everyone in the community for sure,” said Bradberry.
Bradberry says yes the community is going to feel it but everyone is going to have to pivot.
Last week, WFXR News reached out to Parkdale for more information, but we have not yet heard back.
This is a developing story. WFXR News will continue to update this story as additional details are released.
