Opening prayer replaced for Radford City Council

Local News

There’s been a controversial change to City Council meetings in Radford.

City leaders voted to do away with the opening prayer before their meetings.

David Horton was sworn in at the new Mayor of Radford during this week’s City Council meeting. Just hours into his new role, he and other council members passed the vote.

The opening prayer will be replaced with an inspirational statement and a moment of silence.

The change comes after city council members say they got complaints from community members who say that having a prayer isn’t inclusive.

Neighboring towns like Vinton and Christiansburg also start meetings with a moment of silence.
