UPDATE: One man hospitalized after overnight shooting in southeast Roanoke, police say

UPDATE 11:28 a.m.: The Roanoke Police Department released additional information about the early morning shooting in southeast Roanoke that sent one man to the hospital Monday.

According to the department, officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 600 block of Stewart Avenue SE at approximately 1 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 21. When officers arrived on scene, they found a man in the alley with an apparent gunshot wound.

Police say Roanoke Fire-EMS transported the man to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, but there is no word on his current condition.

The department says no arrests have been made in connection with this ongoing investigation.

UPDATE 5:56 a.m.: The condition of the man injured in Monday morning’s shooting is still unknown at this time, but police say the shooting took place in the 400 block of 7th Street between Stewart Avenue SE and Tazewell Avenue SE.

Police say no arrests have been made, but several streets around southeast Roanoke that were closed for the investigation are back open at this time.

Several people who live along 7th Street say they heard at least 20 gunshots.

“I hit the ground, man. What are you supposed to do?,” said Daniel Lane, one of the men who heard the shots. “I have a lot of windows in my room. So I just hit the ground and was hoping [no bullets] would come through the window. I looked out my window and saw officers found an assault rifle on the sidewalk. Just sitting on the sidewalk. Somebody dumped the assault rifle.”

Not including Monday morning’s shooting, Roanoke has seen at least four shootings during the month of September, leaving at least two dead and three injured.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Police officers are investigating after a person was found shot in southeast Roanoke early Monday morning.

According to officers on scene, the call came in around 1 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 21. Police officers found a man shot in an alley on 7th Street near Stewart Avenue.

The man was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. There is no word on his condition at this time.

Several streets in the area are closed as police officers continue their investigation.
