One dead, three injured in Lynchburg overnight shooting

Local News

One person was killed and three others were injured early Sunday morning in a shooting in Lynchburg.

Police said they were called to the 400 block of Rivermont Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday morning. According to authorities, the youngest victim, 21-year-old Shawn Johnson, Jr. of Lynchburg was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to police, Kevin Foxx, 30; Jamall Randolph, 28; and Angelena Garland, 25, all of Lynchburg, were injured in the shooting. Foxx remains in critical condition, officials said.

After seeing ambulance and police in his neighborhood, Joey Kidd said the “first thing I was thinking about is my 15-month-old son.”

Kidd said he was at home with his fiancee, Brittany Clark, and their baby when they heard the sirens.

“It’s scary that it was that close to our building ’cause I guess just the mother instinct kicked in,” Clark said.

“They had a shooting downtown not too long ago – I think it was about two weeks ago,” said Mary Elizabeth Mendoza, who also lives in the neighborhood. “And then now they have this. I mean, what is the world coming to?”

According to police, witnesses saw a gunman open fire from inside a four-door, dark colored sedan. Some neighbors told us they’re being more cautious as they walk the streets.

“We stay at the apartment,” Mendoza said. “I’m trying my best to stay in so that we don’t go out as much.”

No arrests have been made, according to investigators. Anyone with information is asked to call Lynchburg Crimestoppers at 1-888-798-5900.
