One dead after multi-vehicle crash in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR News) - One person is dead after a multi-vehicle crash in Lynchburg at the intersection of Graves Mill Road and Old Graves Mill Road.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m. Monday morning. 21-year-old Dante Demarco Poindexter from Campbell County died at the scene of the crash.

According to police, Poindexter was driving a Chevrolet Impala that ran into the back of a pickup truck at a red light, pushing the pickup truck into the intersection. Poindexter then reportedly veered left and had a head-on collision with a Mitsubishi Outlander.

A fourth vehicle swerved to avoid the three-vehicle crash and hit a curb.

Citizens tried to help the drivers of all of the vehicles and pulled Poindexter out of the vehicle.  "Life-saving measures were started on Poindexter and turned over to EMS on their arrival," police said in a statement.

Poindexter died from his injuries.

The three other drivers in the crash were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

All vehicles were towed from the scene.

The Lynchburg Police Department's Traffic and Safety Unit is continuing to investigate the multi-vehicle crash.
