Old Boones Mill industrial park getting a makeover

Local News

Making what’s old new again isn’t just a trend for clothes and furniture.  The Town of Boones Mill is redeveloping an old industrial park. that used to house the North American Housing Plant.

“It was the largest employer in Boones Mill, and it collapsed during the recession,” said Boones Mill Town Manager, Matt Lawless.

Now, Boones Mill’s Town Manager Matt Lawless says they’re breathing new life into the 73 acre old industrial park.  They hope to transform it’s train station in to a museum, and renovate a 5,000 square foot old factory into the region’s only year round farmer’s market.  The development is called Village Park at Boones Mill.

“We expect it to be a neighborhood gathering point. It solves a food desert problem here in Boones Mill, and I think will also be a culture and tourism destination,” said Lawless.

Lawless says about 15 to 20 local farmers will be able to sell their products.  He says the Farmer’s market, along with another 50,000 square foot  factory and office space will bring a diversity of business that should sustain the town’s economy in the long run.

“I think it will be a great assets to the customers and the people that live in the area,” said Joe Sparks, a livestock farmer from Stewart, Virginia.

Many local farmers, like Joe Sparks are excited about Village Park.  They gather in the town office to pitch their ideas and discuss their needs.   As a livestock farmer Sparks says this new development will make a big difference in his sales, which he says drops when the temperature dips.

“People get in a routine and come to the markets. They want to  buy not only meats, They want to buy produce.  And all of a sudden produce goes out of season.  Well we still have product to sell, but the people quit coming,” said Sparks.

Officials say the commercial offices at Village Park at Boones Mill will open in April, and Farmer’s Market is expected to be open this next year.
