Three officers were injured and two people arrested after a fight outside a Lynchburg restaurant on Saturday, November 24.
Lynchburg Police said they responded to a restaurant on Main Street around 1:40 a.m. Saturday morning to a fight. There was also a crowd of about 50-60 people in front of the business.
Officers tell WFXR News they used pepper spray to break up the fight and ordered the crowd to disperse and stop any disorderly activity.
During the incident, two men were taken into custody.
30-year-old Veshawn Fuller was arrested for Public Intoxication, Resisting Arrest, Obstruction of Justice, and Loitering.
While that was happening, police said 28-year-old Donald Jamal Lipford III aggressively approached officers and reportedly assaulted one of them.
Lipford also resisted arrest and police said they had to use a K-9 to gain control of him.
He is now being charged with Assault and Battery of a Police Officer, Disorderly Conduct, and Obstruction of Justice. Lipford was already wanted on an outstanding Capias of Failing to Comply with a Court Order.
All three officers that has minor injuries have returned to work.
Lynchburg Police said they are investigating the incident, and reviewing the officers’ use of force through the chain of command and their Professional Standards Unit.
The department also sent the following statement in a release:
Large groups of disorderly and unruly people present a significant safety risk to the community and our officers. Therefore, it is important that our law enforcement officers establish peace and order to incidents like this before the situation escalates and becomes more violent and uncontrollable. During this incident, Lynchburg Police Department officers exercised restraint and provided opportunities for those arrested to choose a different outcome for themselves. We strive to work cooperatively with all members of the community whenever we can, and we will not be deterred from that mission based on the actions of a few, nor will we neglect our essential responsibility to keep the peace and maintain order in our community.
