Numerous southwest, central Virginia schools and facilities announce delays and closures for Monday amid winter weather concerns

(WFXR) — As a storm system brings the potential for snow across much of southwest and central Virginia, a number of schools have already decided to postpone operations, close for the day, or operate remotely on Monday.

Here is a list of the schools and government-run facilities around the region that have announced delays or closures as of 1:02 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 3:

Alleghany County:

Alleghany County Public Schools will be closed on Monday because of the impending inclement weather, but 12-month employees are still asked to report to work.

Amherst County:

Blue Ridge Medical Center — including dental and pharmacy — will be closed in Arrington, Amherst, and Appomattox on Monday because of the inclement weather and road conditions.

In addition, the Central Virginia Health District says the Amherst County Health Department will not open until 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

Meanwhile, the administrative offices for Amherst County and for the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office will not open until noon due to the snow.

Both locations for the Amherst County Public Library will also delay opening until 1 p.m. because of the snowy weather on Monday.

Appomattox County:

Appomattox County administration offices will not open until 10:30 a.m. on Monday because of the inclement weather.

Blue Ridge Medical Center — including dental and pharmacy — will be closed in Arrington, Amherst, and Appomattox on Monday because of the inclement weather and road conditions.

In addition, the Central Virginia Health District says the Appomattox County Health Department will not open until 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

Bath County:

The Bath County Courthouse and offices will be closed Monday due to inclement weather.

Bedford County:

UPDATE: Bedford County Public Schools will now be closed and operate on Employee Code 2 (essential personnel should only report when it is safe to do so) for Monday.

In addition, the Central Virginia Health District says the Bedford County Health Department will not open until 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

Bedford town offices will be closed Monday because of current and forecasted weather conditions.

Bland County:

The Bland County administration offices will not open until 10:30 a.m. on Monday because of the weather conditions.

The Mount Rogers Health District says the Bland County Health Department will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Botetourt County:

Botetourt County Public Schools says all district buildings will be closed while staff work remotely on Monday. Each school will share any news about changes to winter sports practices, but student-athletes are encouraged to reach out to coaches or athletic directors with any questions.

Botetourt County Libraries will be closed on Monday because of the inclement weather. Depending on road conditions, the libraries may have a delayed opening on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Buena Vista:

Buena Vista city offices are closed for Monday due to the inclement weather. In addition, the due date for water bills has been extended until Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Campbell County:

Campbell County Public Schools will be closed on Monday because of the threat of inclement weather.

In addition, the Central Virginia Health District says the Campbell County Health Department will not open until 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

Carroll County:

The Mount Rogers Health District says the Carroll County Health Department will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Covington:

Covington City Public Schools and offices will be closed on Monday.

Danville:

Danville Community College will have a virtual learning day on Monday because of the inclement weather.

However, Averett University will still operate normally on Monday. In addition, the COVID-19 testing kiosk will be open from noon to 3 p.m.

Floyd County:

All New River Health District offices — including Floyd County, Giles County, Montgomery County, Pulaski County, and Radford — will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Galax:

UPDATE: Galax City Public Schools will now stay closed on Monday, with no virtual learning.

The Mount Rogers Health District says the Galax Health Department will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Giles County:

UPDATE: Giles County Public Schools now plans to hold a virtual learning day on Monday amid the inclement weather concerns. Meals will also be available for pickup at the SBO between 2 and 3 p.m.

Jefferson Christian Academy in Ripplemead will be closed on Monday due to continuous snow in the area.

Giles County says that this week’s garbage collection will be pushed back a day due to bad road conditions.

All New River Health District offices — including Floyd County, Giles County, Montgomery County, Pulaski County, and Radford — will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Pearisburg town offices, however, will be closed on Monday due to the inclement weather. As a result, the water bill due date will be extended until Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Grayson County:

UPDATE: Grayson County Public Schools will be closed on Monday amid the inclement weather forecast around the region.

UPDATE: In addition, the Grayson County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office will be closed on Monday.

The Mount Rogers Health District says the Grayson County Health Department will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Halifax County:

Halifax County Public Schools will be closed on Monday due to the impending weather forecast. All 12-month employees are asked to “follow code 0” and not report to work.

Henry County:

Henry County Public Schools will be closed (Employee Code 2) on Monday due to hazardous travel conditions.

The mayor’s office in the Town of Ridgeway will not be open until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4 because of inclement weather.

Highland County:

Highland County Public Schools will be closed on Monday, but classes will still be held virtually since the district could not schedule snow days this year.

Lexington:

UPDATE: Lexington city offices will be closed on Monday because of the inclement weather.

Washington and Lee University is also pushing back its opening time for Monday until 10 a.m. due to weather conditions.

Lynchburg:

Lynchburg City Schools will be closed on Monday because of the potentially hazardous conditions from decreasing temperatures and heavy snow.
According to the district, this is a snow day rather than a remote learning day, which means staff members will not be taking attendance or teaching virtually. In addition, maintenance and custodial staff are asked to follow their supervisors’ directions.

Liberty Christian Academy and the Early Learning Center, as well as Timberlake Christian School PreK-12, will also be closed on Monday due to potentially hazardous road conditions. However, Timberlake Christian School says all athletic practices will continue as scheduled, with extended care available in PreK through eighth grade starting at 8:30 a.m.

In addition, Randolph College will be closed for Monday — although essential staff should still report — because of the forecast for inclement weather.

Meanwhile, the Central Virginia Health District says the Lynchburg Health Department will not open until 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

The Lynchburg Sheriff’s Office, Lynchburg Circuit Court, Lynchburg General District Court, and the Lynchburg Juvenile and Domestic and Relations Court are also delaying their opening until noon on Monday.

Martinsville:

Martinsville City Public Schools will not have a teacher workday on Monday. Instead, 12-month employees will report on a two-hour delay.

Martinsville City Hall has been closed off to the public for Monday.

Montgomery County:

UPDATE: The Montgomery County Government Center, the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, the Circuit Court, the Department of Social Services, the Animal Care and Adoption Center, all branches of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library, and consolidated sites will be closed on Monday due to the inclement weather.

New River Community College in Christiansburg will open at 10 a.m. on Monday because of the forecasted weather.

Blacksburg Transit has also postponed service until 10 a.m. on Monday in both Blacksburg and Christiansburg.

The Blacksburg Police Department says the town’s administrative offices, the Blacksburg Community Center, and the Aquatic Center will not open until non because of the likelihood of inclement weather.

All New River Health District offices — including Floyd County, Giles County, Montgomery County, Pulaski County, and Radford — will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday. However, COVID-19 testing will still take place at the Montgomery County Health Department between 10 and 11:30 a.m.

Nelson County:

Nelson County Public Schools will be closed on Monday due to expected snowfall. However, essential personnel are asked to remain on standby in case conditions allow for sidewalks and bus turnaround spots to be cleaned up and prepared for opening on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

The Blue Ridge Health District says the Nelson County office will not open until noon on Monday.

Pittsylvania County:

Faith Christian Academy in Hurt will be closed on Monday amid the winter weather concerns.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, Pittsylvania County offices and departments will be closed on Monday.

Pulaski County:

New River Community College in Dublin will open at 10 a.m. on Monday because of the forecasted weather.

Pulaski County administrative offices will also operate on a two-hour delay for Monday due to the impending inclement weather.

Pulaski County Public Schools says all school and office buildings will be closed Monday due to the inclement weather. Any employees who are not essential for snow removal will be allowed to work from home for the day.

All New River Health District offices — including Floyd County, Giles County, Montgomery County, Pulaski County, and Radford — will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Radford:

Radford University‘s main campus and Radford University Carilion in Roanoke will be closed on Monday because of inclement weather and work conditions. Essential personnel need to report as required, but for others, normal work hours will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Meanwhile, the City of Radford says the Recreation Department will not open until 9 a.m., city offices will not open until 9:30 a.m., and the library will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday because of the inclement weather.

All New River Health District offices — including Floyd County, Giles County, Montgomery County, Pulaski County, and Radford — will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Roanoke City:

Roanoke City Public Schools will not have classes on Monday, but central office and essential operations staff are asked to report two hours late.

Roanoke Catholic School will also be closed Monday because of winter weather concerns.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute in Roanoke will both be closed on Monday.

Roanoke County:

Virginia Western Community College is set to open at 10 a.m. on Monday due to a two-hour delay.

The Town of Vinton’s municipal building will not open on Monday. In addition, the town’s trash routes have been delayed until Tuesday, Jan. 4.

While the Bent Mountain Library will be closed on Monday due to snowy conditions, all other library locations in Roanoke County are open under normal operating hours.

Roanoke County officials have also delayed trash collection for this week because of the inclement weather:

Rockbridge County:

Rockbridge Christian Academy will be closed on Monday.

Meanwhile, Rockbridge County administrative offices will not open until 10 a.m.

Salem:

Salem City Schools will be closed on Monday because of the inclement weather forecast, which would create hazardous conditions during the morning commute.

Wythe County:

Wythe County Public Schools will hold a remote teacher workday on Monday because of the potentially inclement weather. The district will consider possible schedule changes for 12-month employees after assessing the morning weather conditions.

The Mount Rogers Health District says the Wythe County Health Department will not open until 10 a.m. on Monday.

Wytheville Community College will be closed for all students and employees on Monday, including all day and evening classes.

All trash and recycling centers in Wythe County will be closed on Monday because of the weather.
