WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Sunday marked the end of an era in Wythe County as its sheriff officially retired.

Sheriff Keith Dunagan announced his retirement plans in the spring. Dunagan plans to spend his retirement with his wife, children and his grandchildren.

Chief Deputy Charles Foster has been appointed as interim sheriff until a special election can be held to permanently fill the role. Foster says he intends to run for sheriff when the special election takes place.

In neighboring Bland County, Sheriff Jason Ramsey commented on Facebook, wishing him well, calling him a “dedicated and hard working lawman who strikes to help anyway he can.”
