WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A deputy with the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded one of the highest honors in law enforcement: the Congressional Badge of Bravery.
Deputy Jacob Goins received the award on Tuesday, April 6 — which was presented to him by U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith — for his heroic actions during an incident in 2018.
Several years ago, the sheriff’s office says Goins located an armed robbery suspect along I-81, but that suspect pulled out a firearm and shot at Goins, as well as a Virginia state trooper.
According to authorities, Goins took a gunshot wound to his leg, but he still managed to return fire and neutralize the threat.
Goins was ultimately hospitalized for several months and faced detailed therapy before returning to work.
On Tuesday, Griffith recognized Goins for his courage in front of his family, the sheriff’s office, and members of Virginia State Police and the Rural Retreat Police Department.
