CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Authorities say a driver is facing charges after one passenger died and another was seriously hurt following a crash in Carroll County on Monday.

According to Virginia State Police, state troopers were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on Double Cabin Road (Route 753) shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 18 about a quarter of a mile west of Sunnyvale Road (Route 611).

Police say a 2015 Toyota Tacoma was heading east on Double Cabin Road when it ran off the right side of the road, overturned, hit an embankment, and then hit a fence.

The backseat passenger — identified by authorities as 67-year-old Rena C. Franklin of Hillsville — died while being transported by EMS.

In addition, the passenger in the front seat — 73-year-old Kenneth R. Franklin — was brought to the hospital with serious injuries, officials say.

According to police, 44-year-old Crystal D. Barton of Hillsville, was driving the car, but was not hurt in the crash. However, Barton was reportedly charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain control.

Virginia State Police say all three of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, which is still under investigation.
