BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — On Monday afternoon, Virginia State Police shared new details about Friday morning’s officer-involved shooting in Blacksburg that left a man dead.
According to authorities, the Blacksburg Police Department received a call for a welfare check at a home in the 3000 block of Yellow Sulphur Road at approximately 2 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 26.
Officials tell WFXR News that Blacksburg police officers and Montgomery County deputies arrived at the scene and tried to de-escalate the incident.
Police say the man at the home was speaking with officers when he went into the residence, came back with a gun, and opened fire at law enforcement, who shot back and hit the man.
The man — identified by authorities as 29-year-old Joshua David Amodeo of Blacksburg — died at the scene of the incident.
However, no officers or deputies were injured in the incident, according to officials.
The Salem division of Virginia State Police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is reportedly investigating the shooting at the request of Blacksburg Police Department
Once the investigation is complete, Virginia State Police say they will turn their findings over to the Montgomery County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for adjudication.
