UPDATE 6:38 a.m. (8/31/22): The Craig County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a man arrested in Dublin on Tuesday is Shawn Michael Tolbert, the fugitive who sparked a weeks-long search around southwest Virginia following a police chase and crash earlier this month.

DUBLIN, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police took a person into custody in Pulaski County on Tuesday who could be the man wanted out of Craig County and Montgomery County.

According to the Dublin Police Department, this person — who appeared to be Shawn Michael Tolbert, a fugitive facing multiple charges after leading police on a chase, crashing in Craig County, and sparking manhunts around the New River Valley — was spotted on Tuesday, Aug. 30 by someone who had seen photos of Tolbert from the news.

The U.S. Marshals Service, the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, the Virginia Conservation Police, and other local law enforcement agencies headed to the Dublin area.

During the search, officials say a Dublin officer reported a second sighting of that person, so authorities were called out to the area. Virginia State Police sent a tactical team to take the person, who was staying on a bus in a backyard, into custody

According to police, this was an “isolated incident” and there is no danger to the public.

The case remains under investigation.
