UPDATE: 95-year-old passenger dead, 3 others injured after Wednesday crash in Wythe County

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — An elderly Grayson County man is dead and three other people were flown to the hospital after a car crashed in Wythe County on Wednesday, according to Virginia State Police.

Authorities say the single-vehicle fatal crash took place at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25 along Route 21, less than a mile south of Crockett Road. 

Police report that a 2009 Chevrolet Impala was heading north on Route 21 when it ran off the right side of the road, hit a fence, and spun back into the roadway.

The passenger — identified by Virginia State Police as 95-year-old Ronald Wayne of Independence — was wearing a safety belt, but still died at the scene.

The driver, 66-year-old Johnny D. Guynes of Independence, was airlifted to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Police also report two female passengers were airlifted for treatment.

All of the vehicle occupants were wearing a seatbelt.

The crash is still under investigation.
