CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A Carroll County home sustained some serious damage after a Thursday morning fire that took the lives of two canines.

Shortly after 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6, the Hillsville Fire Department says its crews — along with members of Carroll County Fire and Rescue — were dispatched to the 4600 block of Carrollton Pike in Woodlawn for a report of a structure fire.

Fire officials then called in the Galax Fire Department to provide extra manpower and tanker support.

When units arrived at the scene, they found a 3,000 square-foot, single-family home with heavy flames showing from the back of the basement and heavy smoke throughout the main flood.

According to fire officials, Hillsville crews pulled a line to attack the main body of the fire. Then, Galax personnel pulled two lines, entered through the front door, checked for any extension, and extinguished the flames in the attic.

The Galax Fire Department says that units stayed at the scene for an additional hour and a half to complete overhaul of the “extensively damaged structure.”

The occupants were reportedly at home when the fire broke out, but they were able to escape without getting hurt. There were also no reports of firefighter injuries.

However, the department says two dogs died in the fire.

Fire officials say that members of the Galax Fire Department, the Hillsville Fire Department, Carroll County Fire and Rescue, Carroll County Emergency Services, the Pipers Gap Rescue Squad Inc., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and Twin County E-911 were all at the scene of the fire.

Meanwhile, Fries Fire and Rescue and Barren Springs Volunteer Fire Department reportedly covered for the Galax and Hillsville stations while they were battling the Carrollton Pike fire.
