UPDATE 5:03 p.m.: According to Giles County Public Schools, Narrows Elementary/Middle School will hold a virtual learning day on Tuesday because of the high temperatures and high humidity within the building.
This news comes after Narrows Elementary/Middle School and Narrows High School released students at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29 due to the temperature and humidity problems at Narrows Elementary/Middle School caused by the building’s lack of an HVAC system and other electrical issues.
Sabrina Staples, the mother of a Giles County elementary school student, says she wasn’t surprised by the early dismissal on Monday, adding that her daughter has complained a few times about the building being hot.
“I know my daughter was burning up from school and she couldn’t wait to get into the air conditioning,” Staples told WFXR News.
While students at Narrows Elementary/Middle School will not report to school on Tuesday, Aug. 30, they will be expected to complete assignments that were given to them by their teachers on Monday, the district says.
In addition, teachers will reportedly be checking in on students throughout the day on Tuesday to see if there are any questions about the work that was assigned.
If you need a hotspot to provide Internet service so your child can access their work remotely, you are asked to contact Narrows Elementary/Middle School to schedule a time to pick up a hotspot on Tuesday.
In addition, any Narrows Elementary/Middle School student who wants to eat a school meal on Tuesday will need to come to the back door of the Narrows High School cafeteria between 7:45 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. for breakfast or between 11 a.m. and 12:50 p.m. for lunch.
“We will continue to evaluate this situation and make any adjustments to the Narrows Elementary Middle School schedule for future days around the same time tomorrow,” the district wrote on Facebook Monday afternoon. “Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
