Saturday crash in Carroll County leaves two dead, State Police say

CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A Virginia resident and a North Carolina resident are dead following a crash in Carroll County early Saturday morning.

Virginia State Police say the single-vehicle fatal crash took place at approximately 12:05 a.m. on Saturday, May 8 on Route 52, less than a mile north of Sunny Side Road. 

According to officials, a 2007 Ford Fusion was traveling through a curve in the southbound lane of Route 52 when it crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the highway, hit an embankment, overturned, and struck a tree. 

The driver of the Ford — identified by police as 29-year-old Christopher S. Fugitt of Hillsville — was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The passenger — 48-year-old Jarrett L. Hand of Hickory, N.C. — also died at the scene, authorities say.
