MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The search for Shawn Tolbert has pushed through Craig, Giles, and Montgomery counties after he reportedly led police on a chase, crashed his vehicle, and escaped into the woods last week.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, a man — believed to be Tolbert — was seen on security footage in the Brush Mountain Estates area, reportedly trying to break into homes.

Residents in the neighborhood just outside Blacksburg say they’re watching out for updates. According to one Montgomery County mom, Erin Daugherty, she’s not sure if it’s safe to let her kids out to play.

“We haven’t heard a whole lot, so we’ve just been keeping doors locked, windows locked,” she said.

There was a visible law enforcement presence in the neighborhood during the nighttime hours on Thursday, Aug. 18 throughout the morning on Friday, Aug. 19.

By Friday night, while you may not have been able to see them, authorities say they were still in the area to keep an eye on things.

Christine and Dennis Blaszak say they typically don’t turn on their security system at night, but ever since Tolbert was reportedly spotted in their area, they’ve been setting it before they go to sleep.

“We’ve been turning it on and we’ve got a gun. We’re prepared if somebody comes in. We’re gonna protect ourselves,” said Dennis. “I actually checked my shed outside to make sure he isn’t hiding in there.”
