UPDATE 2:23 p.m.: A Virginia state trooper was hospitalized and a Louisiana driver is facing charges after that driver crashed into the trooper’s patrol vehicle along I-81 in Pulaski County Tuesday morning.

According to Virginia State Police, the trooper stopped to help with a broken-down vehicle on the shoulder at mile marker 92 on I-81 shortly after 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21.

However, while the trooper was assisting the disabled motorist, a 1996 Lincoln Towncar heading north on I-81 ran off the right side of the interstate and hit the trooper’s patrol vehicle, which had its emergency lights activated at the time, police say.

Officials say the impact of the crash pushed the Virginia State Police Vehicle vehicle into the disabled motorist’s vehicle.

According to authorities, neither the driver of the Lincoln Towncar — a 27-year-old man from Louisiana — nor the disabled motorist were injured in the crash.

However, the state trooper was brought to Pulaski Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. As of this writing, police say he has been treated and released.

The driver of the Towncar was reportedly charged with reckless driving, driving without an operator’s license, operating a vehicle without registration, and operating a vehicle without insurance.

Meanwhile, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) says that the vehicle crash at mile marker 92 on I-81 North and the tractor-trailer crash at mile marker 91.9 on I-81 South have both been cleared.

PULASKI COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Both northbound and southbound motorists in Pulaski County are delayed for several miles along I-81 because of two crashes that took place near mile marker 92.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) says the southbound left shoulder, left lane, and right lane are closed at mile marker 91.9 on I-81 because of a tractor-trailer crash. As a result, southbound motorists are backed up for approximately four miles.

Meanwhile, a vehicle crash at mile marker 92 had led to the shutdown of the right lane and right shoulder on I-81 North, delaying traffic for 4.5 miles.
