(WFXR) — Because of the wet and chilly weekend weather in the New River Valley, two outdoor pools in Montgomery County and Wythe County will not open for the 2021 season until Memorial Day.
Montgomery County Parks and Recreation shared a Facebook post from the Frog Pond Swimming Pool saying that the pool would be closed on Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30 because of the poor weather forecast and low temperatures.
However, the pool plans to open for the season at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 31.
Keep in mind, though, that the Frog Pond implemented a few changes for the 2021 season:
- The pool will operate with limited capacity on a first come, first serve basis. No reservations will be taken.
- The pool will not accommodate daycares, field trips, organized groups, or parties during regular business hours for the course of the season.
- The pool will not allow re-entry because of the limited capacity.
- The pool will continue to operate under the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) for outdoor swimming pools.
“Please note that our ability to continue offering these public services are subject to change as the CDC and VDH revise their guidelines, recommendations, and requirements,” Frog Pond Swimming Pool said in their Facebook post on Friday, May 28.

Meanwhile, Wythe County Parks and Recreation says the Rural Retreat Lake Pool will be closed on Saturday and Sunday because of the cold temperatures and current weather.
Wythe County officials say the American Red Cross recommends that outdoor pool facilities be closed when air temperatures are 65 degrees or less.
The Rural Retreat Lake Pool is set to be open from noon to 6 p.m. on Monday and then back open on Thursday, June 3, following the summer operating hours.
