CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Hillsville Police Department wants to warn merchants, businesses, and cashiers about fake $100 bills being passed off as real.

Police say the bills have been seen recently in the Town of Hillsville and Carroll County, are 1993 series, and pass when marked with a counterfeit pen detector. That’s because that series is before current security measures were put in place.

The department posted a picture of a fake bill on its social media page and says that the serial numbers on all of the bills are all the same.

Police also stated that all bills in 1990, except the $1 and $2 bills, have a plastic security thread that runs through the bill.
