UPDATE 4:55 p.m.: VDOT traffic cameras are showing that traffic is moving normally at the scene of an earlier tractor-trailer crash on I-81 North at mile marker 127.6 in Montgomery County after crews reopened all lanes.
According to Montgomery County Emergency Services, members of the Elliston Volunteer Fire Department, Shawsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, Roanoke County Fire and Rescue Department, and Christiansburg Rescue were called out to the scene of Sunday afternoon’s tractor-trailer crash near mile marker 128.
Officials say one tractor-trailer had rear-ended another, leaving the driver of the first tractor-trailer trapped inside. First responders used hydraulic tools to free the driver before the driver was brought to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Montgomery County Emergency Services says one person from a third vehicle was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
UPDATE 4:40 p.m.: Emergency crews have cleared all tractor-trailers that were involved in the crash at mile marker 127.6 on I-81 North in Montgomery County.
The right lane and right shoulder, however, are still closed as crews clean up the crash scene.
Expect delays if traveling in this area, which VDOT still reports being approximately seven miles.
WFXR News had a crew drive by the scene just after the tractor-trailers were removed.
UPDATE 4:25 p.m.: Crews have cleared an earlier crash on I-77 South in Wythe County.
On I-81 North at mile marker 127.6 in Montgomery County, significant delays continue behind a tractor-trailer crash. VDOT says backups are still reported to be approximately eight miles.
Traffic is getting past the crash using the left lane; however, the right lane and right shoulder are still closed in this area.
Expect significant delays if traveling on this stretch of I-81 North. Drivers should consider finding another route.
UPDATE 4:05 p.m.: Significant backups are continuing to mount behind a tractor-trailer crash on I-81 North in Montgomery County.
According to VDOT, the crash located at mile marker 127.6 still has the right lane and right shoulder both closed. Traffic is getting past the crash using the left lane.
Backups are reported at approximately eight miles.
The other crash at mile marker 28.5 of I-77 South in Wythe County is still causing backups.
VDOT says there are around two miles of backlogs behind a separate crash.
Drivers should avoid each area.
UPDATE 3:40 p.m.: I-81 North at mile marker 127.6 has again partially reopened at the scene of a multi-tractor-trailer crash.
Backups are still being reported at approximately six miles; however, traffic is using the left lane to get by the crash.
The right lane and right shoulder are still closed in this area.
Also, a separate crash on I-77 South at mile marker 28.5 is causing backups of approximately three miles.
All travel lanes are open; however, residual backups around the crash scene continue.
Drivers should avoid each area and find an alternate route.
UPDATE 3:30 p.m.: All northbound lanes of I-81 at mile marker 127.6 are again shut down due to a multi-tractor-trailer crash.
Backups are still reported to be approximately six miles. Drivers should continue to avoid this stretch of I-81 and find an alternate route.
In addition, a crash on I-77 South in Wythe County at mile marker 28.5 is still creating nearly four-mile backlogs.
Drivers heading in this area should also find another route.
UPDATE 3:15 p.m. (#2): One lane of I-81 North has reopened at mile marker 127.6. A multi-tractor-trailer crash continues to block the right shoulder and right lane.
Backups are still reported to be approximately six miles behind this crash.
UPDATE 3:15 p.m.: A multi-vehicle crash on I-77 South in Wythe County has quickly seen traffic pile up behind the crash scene.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) says that backups at mile marker 28.5 are approximately four miles. The southbound right shoulder is closed due to the crash.
Drivers should plan to find another route around this crash.
UPDATE 3:10 p.m.: All northbound lanes of I-81 at mile marker 127.6 are still closed due to a tractor-trailer crash. Backups are now reported to be approximately six miles.
Drivers are strongly urged to find another route around this crash.
UPDATE 3:00 p.m.: The crash on I-77 South in Wythe County has been moved to the shoulder.
Traffic is using both lanes of I-77 at mile marker 28.5 to get by.
UPDATE 2:45 p.m.: All northbound lanes of I-81 are shut down in Montgomery County at mile marker 127.6 due to a tractor-trailer crash. Backups in the area are reported to be around three miles.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Two crashes are causing problems on interstates in our region.
The first is a tractor-trailer crash on I-81 North in Montgomery County. The crash is at mile marker 127.6, where the right lane and right shoulder are closed.
Scanner traffic indicates that a helicopter is en route to this crash, which will result in I-81 North needing to be shut down completely when that chopper arrives, which should be around 2:40 p.m.
Also, a multi-vehicle crash is causing problems on I-77 South in Wythe County. This crash is located at mile marker 28.5 where the left shoulder and left lane are closed.
Traffic is getting by at both locations; however, significant slowdowns can be expected at each location.
Drivers planning to be in either location should plan on finding another route to avoid significant delays.
