UPDATE: More than 12,000 without power in New River Valley amid snowfall across region

UPDATE 7:42 a.m.: The number of outages reported around southwest Virginia — especially in the New River Valley — continues to climb Thursday morning after the overnight snowfall.

As of 7:28 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, Appalachian Power says at least 12,651 customers are impacted by outages in the following localities:

  • Wythe County: 4,448 customers due to 57 outage cases
  • Bland County: 3,081 customers due to 15 outage cases
  • Carroll County: 2,080 customers due to 30 outage cases
  • Grayson County: 1,834 customers due to 30 outage cases
  • Amherst County: 558 customers due to two outage cases
  • Giles County: 400 customers due to 21 outage cases
  • Floyd County: 155 customers due to four outage cases
  • Pulaski County: 141 customers due to eight outage cases
  • Roanoke City: 95 customers due to one outage case
  • Roanoke County: 79 customers due to five outage cases
  • Galax: 56 customers due to two outage cases
  • Pittsylvania County: 46 customers due to two outage cases
  • Franklin County: 24 customers due to three outage cases
  • Montgomery County: Nine customers due to two outage cases
  • Bedford County: Five customers due to three outage cases
  • Henry County: Less than five customers due to one outage case
  • Lynchburg: Less than five customers due to two outage cases

Meanwhile, Danville Utilities estimates about 1,500 customers are without power throughout its service area due to snow-related outages. Crews are working to restore service at this time, but Danville Utilities says the wet and heavy snow is weighing down powerlines and tree limbs.

(WFXR) — Following hours of rain and snow overnight, more than 11,000 Appalachian Power customers in the New River Valley alone are waking up to outages Thursday morning.

As of 5:58 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, Appalachian Power says at least 12,202 customers are impacted by outages in the following localities:

  • Wythe County: 3,789 customers due to 42 outage cases
  • Bland County: 3,079 customers due to 14 outage cases
  • Carroll County: 2,053 customers due to 25 outage cases
  • Grayson County: 1,848 customers due to 28 outage cases
  • Amherst County: 553 customers due to one outage case
  • Giles County: 503 customers due to 20 outage cases
  • Pulaski County: 109 customers due to six outage cases
  • Floyd County: 80 customers due to 10 outage cases
  • Galax: 56 customers due to two outage cases
  • Roanoke County: 53 customers due to four outage cases
  • Pittsylvania County: 47 customers due to three outage cases
  • Franklin County: 23 customers due to three outage cases
  • Montgomery County: Nine customers due to two outage cases
  • Bedford County: Less than five customers due to two outage cases
  • Roanoke City: Less than five customers due to two outage cases
  • Botetourt County: Less than five customers due to one outage case
  • Henry County: Less than five customers due to one outage case
  • Lynchburg: Less than five customers due to one outage case

Many of these outages appear to have started in the late night hours on Wednesday or the early morning hours on Thursday.
