MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — In a 5-2 vote on Tuesday night, the Montgomery County School Board approved a set of protocols for the treatment of both transgender and gender expansive students just in time for the new school year.
“Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is committed to working with students and families to ensure that all students have a positive, safe, and equitable learning environment. We affirm our commitment to advancing equity by outlining best practices for MCPS to ensure that all students are respected in school, regardless of their gender identity or expression, including transgender, nonbinary, gender-expansive, or gender non-conforming students.”Introduction to the “Policies and Practices for the Treatment of Transgender and Gender Expansive Students” for Montgomery County Public Schools
According to school officials, this policy has three purposes:
- Minimizing social stigma and discrimination for all students in a safe, inclusive, and supportive educational environment
- Maximizing opportunities for social integration so that all students have the opportunity to attend school, be engaged, and achieve academic success
- Affirming that all students have the right to learn without discrimination and harassment
The document includes definitions of relevant terminology, as well as policies regarding bullying and discrimination, student privacy/confidentiality, student identification, student records, access to activities and facilities, and professional development.
