WYTHEVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — The Wytheville Police Department says they arrested a man in connection with shoplifting in the area near an elementary school that caused a modified lockdown.

According to a Facebook post from the department, the man — 38-year-old Travis Dwayne Talbert — ran away from police on Wednesday, Sept. 8, which caused Spiller Elementary school to be put on lockdown.

Then around 6 p.m., a resident spotted Talbert. Officers headed back to the area of the Sheetz Convenience Store on North 4th Street. When they arrived, police say they tried to arrest Talbert but he ran away.

Police say Talbert ran through a car wash and attempted to jump a fence to get to Interstate 81 and then ran to a nearby Bojangles. He ended up hiding in tall grass, according to authorities.

Talbert is facing two counts of larceny shoplifting from a Wytheville Walmart and Wytheville Shoe Department, and one count of obstruction of justice. Police also say that Talbert was also wanted for larceny shoplifting in Christiansburg.

He is being held without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail.
