CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A man is facing multiple charges — including murder — following the death of a woman in Carroll County earlier this week.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says deputies — along with members of Carroll Fire Rescue and Pipers Gap Rescue Squad — were dispatched to 68 Fairlawn Lane in the Woodlawn area for reports of an unresponsive woman.

According to authorities, the woman — identified as 30-year-old Laura Caroline “Carrie” Buffkin — appeared to have a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say they contacted the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, secured the scene, and began conducting interviews.

Investigators ruled the incident a homicide and identified 42-year-old Kevin Lee Sizemore of Hillsville, as a person of interest, the sheriff’s office says.

On Friday, July 29, authorities say they made contact with Sizemore, who happened to have a concealed handgun on him.

Officials say Sizemore was arrested for the following charges after Buffkin’s death:

  • Murder
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Possession of a firearm by a prohibited person
  • Possession of a firearm while subject of a protective order
  • Felony larceny of a firearm
  • Possession of a concealed weapon

Sizemore was taken before a magistrate and brought to the New River Valley Regional Jail, where he is reportedly being held without bond while waiting for his arraignment.

As of Saturday, July 30, the sheriff’s office says the investigation into Buffkin’s death is still ongoing.

Note: This story previously identified the woman who died as Caroline Buffkin instead of Laura Caroline “Carrie” Buffkin. Her name has since been corrected.
