Human skeletal remains discovered by fishermen in Giles County, authorities say

GILES COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Giles County authorities are investigating after human remains were found on the bank of the New River in Glen Lyn on Sunday.

The Giles County Sheriff’s Office says deputies and investigators were called to the area of Shumate Falls on Sunday, May 16 after a group of fishermen discovered skeletal remains.

The sheriff’s office announced on Thursday, May 20 that the remains — which were found on the bank of the New River — were determined to be human.

“We’ve contacted all surrounding jurisdictions. Both West Virginia and Virginia, and no one has any missing persons reports right now,” Sheriff Morgan Millirons of the Giles County Sheriff’s Office said. “We’ve reached out social media, the news media, newspapers, and maybe get the word out that we are looking for someone.”

According to authorities, the Medical Examiner’s Office believes the remains are those of a white man, possibly between the age of 40 and 60.

Officials believe the the time of death was within the past year.

In addition, a pair of high-top Under Armour shoes were reportedly found in the area where the remains were discovered.

According to the sheriff’s office, investigators have contacted several local jurisdictions about missing persons reports, but they have not matched any information at this point.
