BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Tailgating lots near Lane Stadium are packed as Hokie fans swarm Blacksburg.
According to Virginia Tech, tickets are sold out for what many are calling the biggest game of the season, against the ‘Fighting Irish’ or Notre Dame.
People from Indiana, Texas, and North Carolina are crowding the campus to watch the nail-biting match-up.
“Oh, this is going to be so much fun. We have been looking forward to this game all year. We bought season tickets really just for this game,” said Virginia Tech fan Jonathan Cromer.
Cromer says, like many other campers, they thought it was smart to beat the traffic. However, when they arrived, several of the lots were already filled with trailers.
Even hotels told fans that all the rooms were booked up for months, but that didn’t stop some Hokie fans.
“Because all the hotels were taken and The Inn was booked, we said let’s just get a camper and go have a blast,” said Virginia Tech fan Kurt Kostur.
Even with the influx of Hokies on campus, they are not alone. Some Notre Dame fans also showed up early, setting up camp.
“I’m from Texas, so our journey started a couple of days ago. Hit DC, came into his place, and off we went this morning,” said Fighting Irish fan Geoffrey Cislo.
His friend Shannon O’Toole, a proud Irish man, says the history of them liking Notre Dame dates back 50 years when they used to watch their games all the time.
Now, they are die-hard fans.
“This morning, we left Leesburg, had everything loaded up by 5:30 p.m. And we started heading this way about 7 p.m. Last week was a letdown. Hopefully, they rebound back and play a tough game,” said O’Toole.
