UPDATE 8:07 a.m.: According to the superintendent of Grayson County Public Schools, all schools in the district are now closed for the day because of the widespread power outages around the county.

GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Students in Grayson County are set to start school late on Tuesday as thousands of people around the county deal with power outages.

According to a Facebook post from Grayson County Public Schools Superintendent Kelly B. Wilmore, schools will delay their operations by two hours on Tuesday, Oct. 26 because of the county’s numerous outages.

As of 7:43 a.m. on Tuesday, Appalachian Power says there are 2,849 customers without power in Grayson County because of three outage cases. Two of those outages started at 6:16 a.m., with one affecting 1,174 customers and the other affecting 1,667 customers.

The company estimates power will be restored to Grayson County customers by noon on Tuesday.

However, Wilmore says he will notify Grayson County Public Schools families and staff members about whether the district will close for the day by 8:15 a.m.
