(WFXR) — The ninth annual ‘Giving Day’ for the New River Valley — also known as ‘GiveLocalNRV Day’ — has been underway for less than nine hours and donors have already raised more than $223,000 for dozens of nonprofits serving the community.

More specifically, as of 8:55 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, the ‘Giving Day’ website says that 834 people have already donated $223,830 to New River Valley nonprofits.

Last year, the online fundraising effort — hosted by the Community Foundation of the New River Valley — raised more than $519,000 for 95 organizations.

This year, organizers are hoping to make this the most successful ‘Giving Day’ yet by raising $550,000. Some nonprofits will even match your donations, dollar for dollar.

In fact, GiveLocalNRV is awarding 16 grants and prizes totaling $15,000 to some organizations for certain fundraising achievements.

For example, not only will the organizations that raise the most money or have the most unique donors win $1,500, but there will be additional $500 prizes provided to organizations based on the people who donate to them during the five ‘Power Hours’ and three random ‘Golden Ticket’ drawings.
