VSP: Floyd County man charged after he reportedly held a woman at knife-point, was shot by Montgomery County deputy

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A Floyd County man is being held in jail for multiple charges — including attempted murder — following a domestic incident and an officer-involved shooting at a Christiansburg home earlier this month.

According to Virginia State Police, a 911 call came in about a domestic disturbance in the 500 block of Gold Drive in Christiansburg just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 7.

When Christiansburg police officers and Montgomery County deputies arrived at the residence, they found 38-year-old Rusty N. Sutphin of Willis, in the back bedroom holding a 41-year-old woman at knife point.

Both the officer and deputy tried to convince Sutphin to surrender his knife and safely release the woman, but Sutphin refused to cooperate and began attacking the woman, officials say. At that point, a deputy shot at Sutphin.

Sutphin was flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with serious injuries from the shooting, according to authorities.

Meanwhile, police say the woman was brought to LewisGale Montgomery Hospital in Blacksburg for treatment of serious injuries she sustained while being cut by Sutphin. There is no word on her condition at this time.

However, officials say neither the law enforcement personnel nor the 16-year-old girl who was also at the residence during the incident were injured.

At the request of the Town of Christiansburg Police Chief, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Salem Field Office responded to the scene and is investigating both the domestic assault of the woman and the officer-involved shooting.

Police announced on Thursday, Aug. 19 that Sutphin was released from the hospital and — with the assistance of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office — was taken into custody on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at a residence in Willis.

Virginia State Police say they have charged Sutphin with abduction, aggravated malicious wounding, and attempted first-degree murder. He is being held at the Montgomery County Jail at this time.
